Micron opened a 60,000-square-foot training center near its Boise campus Monday, putting production-style semiconductor equipment within reach of new hires, apprentices and College of Western Idaho students before they step onto an operating fab floor.
The building gives Micron a physical answer to the workforce question surrounding its Boise expansion. The company's two planned fabrication plants are expected to support 2,000 permanent positions and more than 17,000 indirect jobs. Buildings and machines can be purchased on a schedule. Skilled technicians take longer.
Up to 20 tools recreate the work
Inside the center are classrooms and space for up to 20 semiconductor process tools. Micron says trainees will use the same types of equipment they will encounter in production. Applied Materials and Lam Research were among the equipment partners, along with SCREEN, Kokusai Electric and Tokyo Electron. Their tools can support instruction for Micron workers and vendor teams.
New employees will begin with an intensive onboarding program covering fab operations and manufacturing systems. Micron expects nearly 2,000 people to pass through job-required courses at the center over the next two years before moving into production roles.
The design lets workers learn procedures, troubleshooting and safety routines outside the production environment. It also gives Micron a place to prepare employees before the next Boise fabs begin taking on staff, rather than asking a live manufacturing floor to double as a school.
CWI will teach two programs on site
Starting this fall, CWI plans to deliver its Advanced Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology programs at the Boise center while continuing to offer programs at its Nampa campus. The same building will house the technical instruction portion of Micron's registered apprenticeship program.
CWI is receiving $3 million jointly from Micron and the federal Commerce Department. The money is earmarked for instructors, teaching rooms and equipment. The arrangement puts college instruction beside the systems students may later operate at work. It also gives CWI access to an industrial training setting that would be costly to reproduce on a community college campus.
At the opening, CWI President Gordon Jones said 98.6% of the college's students are from Idaho. The school now has more than 140 students in its mechatronics program. Those figures make the local stakes plain: much of the workforce pipeline can be built from Idaho students and career changers who already live here.
The first apprenticeship checkpoint is 27 people
Micron welcomed 27 participants into the sixth cohort of its registered apprenticeship program at the opening. It is the company's largest Boise cohort so far, and Micron says it is working toward triple-digit apprenticeship enrollment by the end of fiscal 2027.
Micron created the earn-and-learn program with CWI and the Idaho Manufacturing Alliance. Its purpose is practical: connect technical instruction to a paid path into advanced manufacturing, including for people who are not beginning with a four-year engineering degree. One apprenticeship graduate described entering CWI's mechatronics program after high school, joining Micron and continuing toward a bachelor's degree while working.
The 27-person cohort is the first measurable checkpoint against a much larger staffing need. Micron says its broader U.S. manufacturing commitment exceeds $250 billion and is expected to support more than 90,000 American jobs. In Boise, the accountability test will be closer to home: how many people complete training, move into permanent work and build careers as the new fabs come online.
The center is open and the equipment is in place. The next proof will be Idaho workers moving from the classroom into stable advanced-manufacturing jobs without having to leave the state.
